Domaine Georges Vernay is a long-established, family-owned wine domaine, a flagship of the AOC, where successive generations of the family have worked in service of the terroir.
In the 1930s, before the creation of the AOC, Francis Vernay planted 1 hectare of Viognier on the Coteau de Vernon, which are now the oldest vines in the AOC.
Georges Vernay, who was a leading figure in the Condrieu revival, took over at the helm of the domaine in the 1950s. A man of vision and conviction, he worked hard to rebuild the hillsides and rescue the Viognier grape variety from obscurity, earning himself the nickname of the “Pope of Condrieu”.
His daughter Christine Vernay succeeded him in 1996, finishing the reconstruction of the Coteau de Vernon and converting the entire domaine to organic growing.
In autumn 2020, she was joined by her daughter Emma, who represents the 4th generation of the family.
The domaine, which produces wines from the Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph AOCs, is worked using organic and biodynamic methods.
