How to appreciate them
Each bottle reveals a different facet of the extraordinary character of the Viognier grape grown and vinified in its native terroir: it can be powerful, unctuous, soft, mineral or intense… The pleasure of drinking a Condrieu also resides in its complexity and aromatic length. Floral notes of violets and irises, aromas of ripe fruit (mango, white peaches, apricots), hints of musk, honey, gingerbread and tobacco when at its peak…
within this broad array of aromas and flavours, the wines all possess the same incomparable freshness, balance and finesse.
How to pair them with food
People often want to pair Condrieu with more sophisticated dishes. But that’s quite unnecessary! These are wines that go very well with simply cooked but high quality products: foie gras, grilled lobster, asparagus, dumplings, poultry, frog legs, river fish, goat cheeses such as the rigotte de Condrieu AOP, an apricot dessert…
Where to buy them
Condrieu wines are derived from steep hillsides, traditional viticulture and low yields, and are therefore hard, but not impossible, to find! They are available on restaurant wine lists, from your local wine shop and directly from the wineries themselves, as well as from numerous websites.
When and how to serve them
Condrieu wines can be enjoyed young… or with a bit of bottle age. The great vintages have an ageing potential of up to 20 years. Despite the praises heaped on these wines, they can still be appreciated in a simple and straightforward manner. Whatever the occasion, aperitif or meal, on your own, with your other half or your family, take the time to really appreciate them. Drinking a Condrieu is an emotional experience with infinite subtleties, depending on the wine producer and the vintage. To enjoy the wine at its best, do not serve it too cold, but aim for a temperature between 11-13°C.
